Welcome to the developing website of Atlanta Studio Pottery. This page is still very much under construction. But so is the pottery itself. Just this week glazes are being tested and the kiln is being put through its paces for the first time. Hopefully this site and the physical studio can find their rhythms concurrently.
Atlanta Studio Pottery is a production pottery studio focused on functional pottery for daily use, made from porcelain and local clays. I run this pottery out of a small studio in Inman Park, Atlanta. My background and training is in British studio ceramics. I was a work-study student at Maze Hill Pottery under Lisa Hammond for 2023 while living in London and studying art for my MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London. While at Maze Hill, I developed the foundational skills and preferences that shape my style as a potter.
Then, during the last year of my MFA, I worked closely with the Yushu Tea Gallery, producing ceramics for their London gallery and learning about contemporary Chinese ceramics. This led to a residency in Jingdezhen, China, where I studied with several of the other artists represented by Yushu and developed work for an exhibition in their Guangzhou gallery.
My current plans for this site are to keep an up-to date log of the activities going on in the pottery and to show work being produced. I don’t much like social media. I feel oddly exposed. I don’t mind being exposed in some ways, but there’s a mix of vulnerability, intimacy, and, like, deep conformity/social gaze to it that I am trying to sort out my relationship to. Part of that is looking for alternatives that don’t feel quite so off, and this site is a big part of that.
If I can figure out the coding, I’d love to do my online sales independently through here rather than through a more corporate online store. I’m not quite there yet though, so that’ll be a task for the coming weeks.
