A besom is a type of traditional broom, typically made from birch twigs. The twigs are bundled together and wrapped around a central pole. I also like the name river sweep for this piece, but, like some of my other recent work, this piece plays with the relationship between an old, outdated form and historically dated objects that none the less take up space and continue to act within contemporary space. To emphasize this connection, I thought besom might be a better name.
